Solo exhibition, 10-23 January

Re-see.

“Artists can color the sky with red because they know it’s blue. Those of us who are not artists have to color things as they really are or people would think they are stupid.”
 (Quote by Jules Feiffer)

Choosing to treat the topic of “dyschromatopsia” for an art exhibition may seem rash, insane; and perhaps it is, but when it turns out that color blindness - as we commonly call this particular condition of vision - is a peculiarity of a painter, that is, the artist Bruno Biondi, then one realizes the originality of the event. The difficulty in recognising colours has always been a constant genetic in the Biondi artist’s family. In fact, as a child, he preferred to use whites and blacks: for him, pasta with tomato sauce was blue, while the complexion of his friends was green. The chromatic spectrum entirely out of phase gave him the distinctive specificity of being able to perceive some minimal values not visible to monitors by others. Biondi lives in a world of his own from the chromatic point of view, and this makes him a singular artist. At work, secretly, initially, he was helped by a trusted person to mix the colours - with which he has always worked - in an appropriate manner. He has always loved pure colours such as white and black as he felt them deeply inherent in his nature and many of his works veered more towards such colours; but, over time, he decided to include colours such as yellow, blue and red in his artworks. In fact, the new exhibition in the STATUTO13 gallery presents us, in addition to the white, black or sloping shades towards grey, also the nuances of the primary colours.

“The red,” as we imagine it, as a typically hot color, without limits, acts inwardly as a very lively, bright, restless color, which however does not possess the character of prodigality of the yellow, which is consumed by spreading out from all parts, but generates, despite all its energy and intensity, a strong note of an immense energy, almost aware of its purpose.”
(Quote by Wassily Kandinsky)

I always have a chill when I look at the red. I know nothing more pulsating and expansive than this colour that every time faces the door of the heart and knocks. And when the heart opens there is neither discomfort nor melancholy, but only emotion and vertigo. Observing these new shades in the works of Bruno Biondi gives a sort of trepidation that captures the attention of my soul, and that can vibrate the strings of spirituality and purest emotionality. Often we re-see the verticality present and typical in his paintings and his tables but connote them, insert them in a world where colour emerges and manages to awaken the senses in the intimate. In Roman times and the Middle Ages the red flag was used by the armies to intimidate the enemy and wanted to indicate that, in case of victory, there would be no mercy. It was also hoisted by pirate ships before plundering a vessel. Later it symbolised being willing to fight: for example, it was raised on castles and besieged cities to indicate that they would not give up. In the following years, the red flag was used by governments to report emergencies or to signal the imposition of martial law. I, therefore, perceive an urgency, unveiled by the colours chosen by Bruno Biondi for this new and fascinating exhibition, that of a calm and compassionate man who manages to scream metaphorically with the aid of colour. Silently crying, poetically, the beauty of life, the desire to emerge from the darkness, the sincerity of those who generously give a part of themselves creating an intimate and authentic work of art.
